City Meet Info - Directions & Markings

Dear Swim Team Families,

Attached is the work crew for the City Meet on Saturday. Each family should find their name somewhere to work on Saturday. Thanks in advance for your help. It is a big job getting enough timers together to run and meet and we are fortunate to have families willing to help out. It is the best place to see your kids swim so enjoy the view!!! Swimmers should be marked like this.

We are having an optional practice out at St. George's tomorrow at 5:00. The practice is mainly for those swimmers that need to see the venue to feel comfortable Saturday and for those that have never swum there before. It should last 30-45 minutes. Directions are here. Campus map is here.

The end of the season celebration party is Sunday at the pool at 5:30. It should be a lot of fun!!!

See you soon and GO RHODES!!!

Attached please find the meet invitation for this weekend's big meet. Held at St George's in Collierville (1880 Wolf River Blvd), City Meet warm-ups for the morning session will begin at 7am and end at 7:45am. Competition start time is 8:00am. Warm-ups for the afternoon session will not begin before noon and the afternoon competition will not begin before 1:00pm. All 8 & unders and 9/10 boys swim in the morning session. 9/10 girls swim in the afternoon with all 11&ups.

For your viewing pleasure, check out the psych sheet to see how your athletes are seeded.

We will have an afternoon practice Friday at St George's so that your children will be familiar with the pool. Once I have been given a time slot, I will be able to let you know.

Last year our reserved area was on the lawn just outside the pool doors and clerk of course. Feel free to bring tents to setup on Friday. We will sit together as a team with as much red and black as we can find from our closets.

More info to come. Stay tuned.

Carla

End of Year Info

The season is drawing to an end very quickly. It's hard to believe that this time next week we'll be getting ready for our end of the year celebration!!

But, before then we have several exciting events this week.

First, we need several volunteers for the aquathon on Tuesday morning (rain delay til Wednesday). This event is during regular practice times and the swimmers love to see how many laps they can swim!! The limit is 100 and we need several parent volunteers to keep track of the numbers. Please let Katie (sentilles@comcast.net) know if you can help. The job comes with coffee and donuts from CAFE ECLECTIC!! Yum. If you can't stay and count, we also need fruit, juice, milk and cups for our hard working swimmers. Again, please email Katie the items you are bringing and the time you plan to deliver the food and drinks.

Checks for the aqua-thon should be made out to Rhodes Swim Team and you can give them to any coach or league rep. I have attached the forms.

A few other things- we will have practice Friday afternoon at the St. George's pool so the swimmers can check it out before the big meet on Saturday. Time TBA.

City Meet is Saturday. Get PUMPED!!!

Sunday is the end of the season celebration. BBQ and beverages provided by the team!! Cake and awards too! Feel free to bring a side item. The party starts at 5:30.

Have a great week!!

Aqua-thon on Tuesday, July 13th

Swim Team Families,

Get pumped up for the Aqua-thon which will take place at the pool during regularly scheduled practice times next Tuesday. Let's see how many laps your swimmer can swim to earn money for the team. In addition to providing our awesome coaches with a nice end of the season treat, we hope to raise enough money to purchase the cool timing system that the BCBF brought to our pool last week. It costs approximately $2,000 so if each swimmer raises $40.00 we will be able to accomplish both goals!! Let's have a great aqua-thon!!!

Information and pledge sheet are attached. Contact Sarah, Katie or one of our coaches with questions. We will need volunteers to count laps and bring breakfast for our hungry swimmers next week. Let us know what you can do to help out.

Thanks again for being the most supportive swim team parents and GO RHODES!!!!

CITY MEET JULY 17th... & no Practice 7/5

IMPORTANT NOTE: NO SWIM PRACTICE ON MONDAY, JULY 5th!!!

City Meet will be held at St George's in Collierville on July 17th. This is the meet that we have all been looking forward to! Members from all clubs in the league will be participating. Medals will be awarded for 1st - 8th place and ribbons for 9th - 16th in each event, plus high point trophies in the various age groups. It always proves to be an exciting meet!

Rhodes earned 2nd place in the large team division last year and we would love to improve on that this year. Relays are worth double points, so the more swimmers we have the merrier.

Coaches need to submit entries by Monday, July 5th at noon, so we need to know by Saturday, July 3rd if you are able to attend. NO LATE ENTRIES ARE ACCEPTED. The league will not allow us to enter any swimmer after Monday, July 5th, plus we do not get a refund for no shows.

We look forward to all of you signing up!

Swim and have fun!

Colonial Make Up Meet - Tues, June 29th

Important - Don't miss Guppy Meet Info in last post! Sign ups are due now :)

We will be putting a sign up sheet for hosting Colonial on Tuesday, June 29th. Rhodes has already reset the timer on the pool lights and is researching the big lights.

This week we will be at the University Club on Central. Warm ups begin at 5 pm. Meet starts at 6 pm. Details to follow.

Guppy Meet Info needed ASAP!

You have probably noticed on the blogspot this event called “2010 Guppy Meet” and wondered what that was all about.

The Guppy Meet, unlike our Thursday night dual meets, is a meet where members of all the Memphis Summer Swim League teams compete against one another. The reason why this one is so special is that it is designed ONLY for 10 & under swimmers who do not swim faster than a specific time in the various events. It is a grand opportunity to let your swimmer shine. Ribbons will be given to the top 16 in each event, a special award will be given to the top 5 swimmers in each age group, everyone goes home with a goody bag and those who break the standard will receive a standard breaker ribbon.

Now that we have completed our first meet and have some times on everyone, we can provide a report that tells us who is eligible to swim in that meet. Last year, we sent 20 swimmers and they performed very well bringing home a 2nd place plaque for the team. It was quite an exciting day!

The meet will be held at the Ric Nuber YMCA on Quince on Sunday June 27 (next weekend). Warmups begin at 7:00am and the meet starts at 8:00am. We will be submitting entries on Sunday the 20th with additions and corrections being sent on Monday the 21st. The entry fee is $20. Checks will be made out to Rhodes Swim Team, so we can provide one check to the YMCA.

Attached you will find the invitation, standard breaker information and an eligibility report. We encourage everyone on the attached sheet to swim in this meet. The more people we have attend, the more fun it will be.
Please send us back an email tomorrow letting us know if you are interested or call with questions. Thanks so much!!

Racquet Club @ Rhodes - Heat Sheet

Hi Team!

Attached please find the heat sheet for tomorrow night. Warm-ups will begin promptly at 5:00pm with the older groups swimming first. The young swimmers will merely do a few laps to prevent them from tuckering out early.

There will be a positive check-in at the announcers table. If your swimmer does not sign-in by 5:30pm we will assume that they are unavailable for relays (unless of course we already know that they will be a late arrival). This will help prevent confusion among relay team members, parent volunteers who are graciously assisting in the lineup and clerk of course.

The winner of last week’s spirit award (in the form of a Sports Authority gift card) is Claire Sentilles for her extravagant costume. Congratulations Claire!
The little ones have a chance to win a Ben & Jerry’s gift card for their team spirit as well.

Let’s hope for some good weather. I can’t wait to see everyone swim.

Wed Update on 6/10 meet with Colonial

1. Updated as of Wed pm - Colonial Work Crew

2. Weather Check - Cancellation will be posted on the blog, but in all probability the meet will go on. See note below about warm ups.

3. Note from Coach Carla -

Hi Lynx!

Our first home meet is tomorrow night. How exciting!

In the morning, we will mark the little ones' arms with their event, heat and lane assignments. We will have a light practice, review relay starts and play games like sharks and minnows.

We will host Colonial Country Club at our pool. Warmups will start at 5:00pm for the older swimmers, 5:15pm for 9-12 year olds and 5:30pm for 8&unders. The meet will begin promptly at 6:00pm. Please be prepared with swim caps and googles and remember that USS logos are not allowed.

We are very much in to team spirit. Everyone is encouraged to display as much of it as they like. Feel free to bring posters and markers to make signs or arrive in your favorite silly wig. We may have to have a prize for the swimmer that looks like they are having the most fun.

Go Rhodes!

Heat Sheet for tonight's meet against Bluff City

Note: Please read all 3 Bluff City posts below...especially the initial one about parking.

Hi team!

Click on link to the right to find your heat sheet that will tell you what event, heat and lane your swimmers are in tomorrow night. Please arrive a few minutes early to the meet. We will have the 13-`19 year olds warm up first, then 9-12 year olds and lastly 8 & unders. This will give us time to mark up the 8 & unders with their heat and lane information on their arm.

Before your swimmer's event, please have them report to their coach. For 8 & unders, see Coach Kris, 9-10 and Seniors, report to Coach Carla and 11-14 year olds report to Coach Irene.

The objective of this first meet is to learn the protocol of a swim meet, have fun and display sportsmanship. We cheer for our teammates as well as say 'good job' to those swimming around us. We are respectful of our host team and we pick up after ourselves.

At Rhodes we are very thankful that we have great parents who help out and fantastic kids in the pool and around the deck.

See you at the meet!

From Coach Carla re: Bluff City

Hi Rhodes!

Our first meet is here! I cannot believe it.

We swim against Bluff City Blue Fins Thursday night. Warmups begin at 5pm with a meet start time of 6pm. The Bluefins swim at the Ric Nuber YMCA at 5885 Quince Memphis, TN 38119 directly across from the Licterman Center. Parking is limited. It may be a good idea to arrive early since they typically ask that we park in a grassy field just southwest from the facility. Signs will direct you.

They will have a concessions area, however it is always a good idea to have water and/or sports drinks and healthy snacks like fig newtons available for your athletes.

It's a good idea to bring chairs and playing cards or some other form of entertainment while your children are waiting to swim. While we do have monitors for the various age groups, please help us by reminding your children of their event. If they wouldn't mind chatting with one of the coaches before and after their swims, we will be able to establish a good routine.

Thanks so much! Go Rhodes!

Carla Mabie

Thurs pm Drop Off & Parking Info from Bluff City

Here's a heads up regarding the parking situation at the Y tomorrow night. Just be aware that there will be congestion, but looks like they have worked through it. The overflow parking is a quick 5 minute walk from the pool.

from Bluff City Blue Fins: "I’ve just talked to the director of the Y, and they will be having camp pick up at the same time we will be arriving for the meet tomorrow night. They are going to set up two lanes for traffic as you turn in to the lot and go to the right- one for camp pick up, and one for swimmer drop off. There will be no parking in this area until after 6. They will have personnel and signs to direct cars. Overflow parking will be in the field off of Lynnfield as in the past. There will also be signs directing folks that way. Y security officers will patrol the area.

Also Coldstone Creamery (at Park and Ridgeway) will be staying open late tomorrow night for anyone who wants to celebrate with ice cream. Triple winners will get a free small sized serving!"

BARGAINS & VOLUNTEER CALLINGS

1. Stroke & Turn Judges - Many thanks to Barbara Jennings & Terrence Robinson for being quick on the draw to volunteer as Stroke and Turn Judges at our home meets. Michael Synk and Romy Morgan are alternates.

2. Kick off Banquet - Many thanks to Katy Leopard and company for masterminding the Saturday, May 8th Kick off Banquet. We'll post more details closer to time. Families usually bring a salad or side to share. Drinks are provided. Pizza is sold by the slice. Swim & Tri will come with suits, fins, and goggles. Team suits can be ordered.

3. Concessionaire Coordinator - We have 3 home meets with hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, drinks, and candy available. The funds raised from concessions help keep the cost of the swim team at the low, low price of $120. Lorraine Lovell is more than willing to share her expertise, but has summer deadlines that conflict with this responsibility. So... we need someone else to pick up the baton.

4. Spring Training - Cost is prorated to $85 for the remaining 5 weeks. Show up Monday/Wednesday from 4 to 5 pm if you're ready to join the early birds and get a jumpstart on the season.

5. Membership and Team Sign up - Forms should be accessible through the links at the bottom of the right hand column of the blog and can be mailed to Jon Duncan's attention or dropped off at the athletic office.
