City Meet entries

HERE are the meet entries for the City Meet on Saturday. It's going to be a great meet!!! Can't wait to see how fast everyone swims!!!

Remember we have practice on Friday night from 5 - 6pm at St George's.

Also, our end-of-season party is on Sunday at 4:00pm at Rhodes. The food is being provided and all the kids will be getting awards.

Go Rhodes!!! Swim Fast!!!

More City Meet Information

Good afternoon everyone (Coach Kirsten here)!

I hope you all are excited for Saturday. I know all the coaches are.

It looks like the 8 & unders and 9/10 boys will be in the morning session and the 9/10 girls and 11 & ups in the afternoon session.

Warm-ups for the morning session will be between 7am and 7:45am. The afternoon warm up session will not start prior to Noon, but it depends on when the morning session begins. We will have a more specific time by tomorrow night at the latest.

Coach Molly will post the events everyone is swimming tonight. Be aware that the relays are not set in stone, and may change.

If you would like to see where your child is seeded, the psych sheet is posted on the Memphis Thunder webpage (link below). For those of you new to swimming, a psych sheet shows what place everyone would come in if everyone swims the exact time they are entered in. It also gives the order of the events. The other thing this site will have on the day of the meet is live results from each race.

Memphis Thunder - MSSL page

If you would like a heat sheet, they will be for sale at the meet on Saturday.

DON'T FORGET... PRACTICE at St. George's will be tomorrow (Friday the 27th) from 5pm-6pm. This is a great time to come and see the pool and practice starts, finishes, and turns!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with one of us.

Friday practice TIME CHANGE!!!

We have been asked to swim from 5 - 6pm on Friday at St George's. Sorry for the inconvenience!!!

City Meet information

We will have a practice at St George's on Friday evening from 6 - 7pm. I'd like everyone to come to this important practice. It will give the swimmers a chance to "try out" the pool and to practice starting off the blocks there. The pool is large and can be a little overwhelming if they have never been there before.

Here is some important information about the City Meet on Saturday, July 28:

START TIMES: Warm-ups for the morning session begin at 7 am and end at 7:45.  Meet start time is 8 am.  Afternoon session warm-ups will not begin before noon and the afternoon session will not begin before 1 pm.  Division of participants between morning and afternoon sessions will not be determined until after all entries are received.

Here is how you mark your swimmer:

Here is a map of St George's

I'll post the entries tomorrow.

COLONIAL IS COMING TO RHODES!

Dear Parents & Swimmers,

Here is the Combined Heat Sheet for our last dual meet of the season... duel would work, too!

We are having a home meet with many of our swimmers competing out of town, so we definitely need all hands on deck. If you are one of the parents relaxing on the sidelines and declining or sidestepping volunteering while other parents make it possible for your child to swim, you'll need to reconsider community service for this meet. We are going to be very, very short-handed.

And many, many thanks to those parents who consistently and eagerly pitch in without even being asked!

Warm ups begin at 5. Meet begins at 6.

Racquet Club results

Congratulations to everyone on a fantastic meet last night! Another WIN for Rhodes Lynx!!!
A special thanks goes out to all you parents that step up to help. We could not have such a great team without you!
Carla Mabee was rockin it as our starter last night! She won't be here next Thursday (our last home meet) so if someone would like to volunteer for that important role, just shoot me, or Sarah Hodges an email.

HERE are the results from the meet. Many of you keep dropping time - CONGRATS!!! It's all about your hard work and consistent effort in practice.

We only have TWO more weeks of practice until our big City Meet! These are probably the most important practices of the whole summer!!!

We will have more information on the City Meet as the time gets closer. If you know that you will not be able to attend the meet, make sure you sign the book - or email or text me.

Racquet Club comes to Rhodes

Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July! Coming back for our second to last meet, we have the combined heat sheet. Somehow over the break, however, the volunteer work crew sign up sheet walked away from the famous notebook on the usual table. Home meets require all hands on deck. Ack!

Camille Gamble does a fantastic job of shopping and chopping, but sometimes she and her family handle set up, sales, and packing up. Not totally, of course, she has enthusiastic helpers, but she should never be alone! Be quick to pitch in flipping burgers, swapping pizza for cash, or putting away unused inventory.

Also, Tracy Word & I have already spent a good deal of time getting ready for tomorrow night - combining heat sheets, communicating with Rhodes and the Racquet Club, not to mention searching in vain for the missing work crew sheets. So, yep, we're begging! Please be quick to find us when  you walk through the gate and offer to help, so we can fill up all the slots. Also, if you're working the second session, please take the initiative to listen for Event 44 and introduce yourself to the person you're taking over for.

Rhodes has a great team spirit, so let's go all out on deck and around the concession stand tomorrow!

See you at 5 ready for warm ups!

Swim & Have Fun!

P.S. You may need to park on the east side of the pool depending on the construction on the west side.

Make A Splash!

Please see link below & take two seconds to vote for Memphis! On a quicker note... don't forget to bring any swim suits of any size, adult/child, XXL to teeny tiny tots to the pool. These suits are being collected and passed on at no charge to swimmers at city pools who need a suit to swim. They could also use caps & googles, (but have fins & kickboards). Vote Memphis & give a suit!

Dear Make a Splash Mid-South partner,

I’m excited to let you know that we’re a finalist for a $5,000 grant and a visit to our city by Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones. We need your help to ensure that Memphis is the winning city for this contest sponsored by USA Swimming and Phillips 66.

Go to http://www.usaswimming.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabId=2311&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en-US and vote for Memphis. Watch the video that features our swimmers and celebrates all the good we’ve accomplished together in Memphis. Thanks to your efforts, more than 3,000 children have received free or low cost swim lessons, more than 300 adults know CPR, 50 teens have become lifeguards and countless lives have been changed.

Please send this to your aquatic colleagues, friends and family. This grant would help us further our efforts and a visit by Cullen Jones would generate a lot of excitement about swimming in our community.

If you have any ideas of how you can help spread the word and need help, please contact Jennifer Parris atparrisj@makeasplashmidsouth.org or 361-4536.

Sincerely,

Anthony Norris

Results from GCC Meet

HERE are the results from the meet last night. You can see we had ALOT of swimmers drop times!!! Fantastic effort by everyone!
GCC did beat us though....   330 - 257  :-(

If you see a DQ next to your swimmers name, that means they were disqualified in that event, but I still posted their time from the event. Usually the DQ will happen when
#1 - only touch with one hand at the finish on Breaststroke or Butterfly
#2 - the swimmer turns on their stomach at the finish on Backstroke
#3 - a relay swimmer will take off early (didn't wait for the swimmer in the water to touch the wall)

I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who helped last night. It can be a little overwhelming sometimes and you all step up so graciously!!!! Thanks!!! Especially those of you who "wrangle" the little ones. :-)

We still have lots to work on this week. Try and make every effort to be at all the practices.

Have a great weekend!!!

Germantown entries

HERE are the entries and the combined heat sheet for the Germantown meet tomorrow night.

Everyone should report to the pool by 5:00.

Thursday's practice - NOODLE DAY!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!

ALSO:
#1 Please make sure your swimmer has a Rhodes Swim Cap. They are not allowed to wear any other cap, especially USA swim caps, if they wear one at all.

#2 The last week of June we will be having swim practice in the evenings because of the Rhodes Swim Camp that will be going on during the morning hours. The 10 and unders will be swimming from 6 - 7pm and the 11 and ups will swim from 7 - 8pm

#3 The Swim Camp brochure has more details. $130 for Rhodes members/$150 for non-members.

#4 Both scorers who signed up for tomorrow have swimmers unable to attend the meet. So anyone who is  can type H (for home) and A (for away) into the computer is encouraged to step forward and help out with scoring. Work crew sheet will be posted tomorrow by noon.

#5 A lot of swimmers are attending an out of town meet, so we will need all the help we can get. Also, Second shift, please take the initiative to monitor the progress of the meet and relieve the first shift on or before event #44.

YMCA Blue Fins @ Rhodes - Work Crew

Dear Swimmers & Families -

Here is the work crew list so far. Parents, when you arrive at the pool, please find Sarah Hodges.

1. If you are on the work list, please check in, so we'll know you made it to the pool.

2. If you are not on the work list, please check in and ask where we need help!

We don't expect you to be able to work, if your hands are full with younger siblings and a traveling spouse. Flights are delayed. A child gets sick at the last minute. We have also had parents in the process of serious medical treatments. Do not feel guilty, if you fall into one of those categories, because other parents will fill in for you. Right?!

Parents of all the teams in the Memphis Summer Swim League run all the swim meets. You can step away from the grill to watch your swimmer's events. No one is asked to missed seeing their child swim, but all Rhodes parents need to pitch in!

A limited number of heat sheets are printed for the coaches and timers, etc., but otherwise you will need to print one off for your personal use. See Coach Molly's post below for a copy of the heat sheet.

Don't forget to check in with, "How can I help?" We will gladly find a job that fits your skill set and comfort level! We are all about swapping people around to make the evening fun for you as a parent.

Swim & Have Fun!

P.S. Don't forget that food for dinner &/or a snack will be available for your family at the concession stand!

Heat Sheet for June 7th meet

Here it is!!
The first heat sheet of the season.

If you don't see your name, please let me know!!!! Sometimes mistakes are made - especially this first meet of the season!
Also, if you aren't swimming your favorite event, don't worry. There are plenty of meets left!

Warm ups start at 5:00pm. Be at the pool at 4:45pm.
Thanks!

Getting ready for the first meet...1, 2, 3, Go!

Hi, all!

1. Volunteers - We are still in need of volunteers for the meet Thursday night. Specifically we need timers in the second half, a head timer to trade out watches if someone's stop watch malfunctions, scorers, & several on the concession sales team, especially in the second half. Sign up sheet will be out during practices.

2. Out of towners - Entries have to be submitted to the league by noon on Wednesday. The easiest way to let the coaches now that your swimmer is not available for a meet is to use the notebook available during practice and write your swimmer's name on the page for the particular meet that you'll miss. You can do that now even if your swimmer isn't going to camp until July. When a swimmer is a no-show, heats and relays have to be reconfigured which complicates communication all the way around.

3. Arrival time - Shoot to arrive at the Rhodes pool between 4:30 and 4:45 so your swimmer will have time to set his/her things down, get goggles and cap in place, and be ready to hit the water for warm ups at 5 pm.

Thanks!
Sarah PH

P.S. The scoring is not difficult, but is critical to running the meet. The program runs on an excel spreadsheet and calculates place values automatically. The other team also has a scorer, so the two scorers help each other out and compare totals to make sure both teams are on track. If data entry doesn't scare you, then you'll do just fine...If you can do this, please let Tracy or me know. We'll also provide all the hand holding you need! Computer provided.

Monday, June 4, 2012

Practice cancelled

10 am practice for June 4 is cancelled.

Monday, May 28, 2012

2012 - Season Premier!

Practice starts tomorrow! Coaches will be there to get swimmers off to a good start. See times at top of right hand column.

Sign ups -

1. Tracy Word will be at the pool this week for those who have not yet turned in registration. Please contact us right away, so we can get a good count on the t-shirts and increase the possibility that you'll get the right size. :)

2. If you know anyone who would like to swim, please bring them along to practice. We are especially low on teenagers, so grab a friend! We need all the new swimmers we can get! And, yes, league rules state that swimmers have to be a member of the club they represent.

3. Most importantly, both Tracy and/or I have swimmers who are in the mid to late teens & will probably not be available as league reps next year. Preferably we need someone who can commit two years - one this year as backup to walk through the very short 8 week season in 2012 and then take over as leader for 2013, when presumably another parent will be the backup. Most clubs operate this way. We'd love to hand over the leadership in a methodical way. If you are a parent who can step up to the plate, please let Tracy or Sarah know.

Swim & Have Fun!

Inclement Weather Policy

Inclement weather policy

We will swim unless it is lightening/thundering. A little rain doesn't hurt - the kids are in the water anyway!
Check the weather/radar before you leave your house if you are in doubt. I'll also post it on this blog if practice is cancelled.

Summer Swimming is HERE!!!

I am looking forward to coaching THE BEST SWIM TEAM this summer!!!

For those of you who missed the Kick-off Party, here is what was discussed:
     1. Practice will begin May 29th at our regular practice times: 9 & 10's 8:00 - 9:00am, 11 & up 8:45 - 10:00am, and 8 & unders 10:00 - 10:45am
     2. The last week of June we will be having practice in the evening. Times TBA
     3. Equipment: all swimmers need goggles (maybe two pair!), fins, practice cap - or hair tie for the girls
     4. Volunteer: Each family needs to volunteer to help out at our meets. There will be a notebook at practice where you can sign up, if you didn't already at the kick-off party
     5. Absent: If you will be missing a swim meet due to family vacations, please sign the book as far in advance as possible! That helps us out with our meet entries, especially the relays! Thanks!!!
     6. Old equipment: If you have any old fins or suits that you would like to donate to new swimmers, please bring them to practice
     7. Swim lessons: all the coaches and lifeguards are available to teach lessons or give extras help to all our swim team members and families. Just ask!

Our goal for this team is to make better swimmers! We use a lot of stroke/technique drills to help each of the swimmers improve. We also use repeating sets to help build up their endurance and to get them faster.
It's always fun to watch all the swimmers get faster each meet and see how much they have improved from the beginning of the summer to the end!
We also want our swimmers to be show good sportsmanship to each other and opponents. We cheer for and encourage our teammates during practice and meets.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at btwcoach@gmail.com

Thanks!

See you at the pool!!!
